A reconstruction of the open-air theatre where Shakespeare's plays were first performed, on the south bank of the Thames. It opened in 1997 and holds around fifteen hundred people, many standing in the yard in front of the stage. Beside it, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse stages plays by candlelight indoors. Tours explain the building and its history.
