A small sixteenth-century fort on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. It was converted into a holiday home in 1901 by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens for the owner of Country Life magazine. The island is reached by a causeway that is covered by the tide twice a day, so check crossing times before you go.
