The Beautiful Mancs began with one gig. Ben and Jakki, who met at a Paul Heaton concert at Co-op Live in late 2024, played The Strawberry Duck on 8th May 2025 to raise money for Manchester Pug Thing. The name was picked in a hurry for the poster and is meant tongue in cheek. The music is not. They aim for authenticity without going method. The details that make a Heaton song sound right matter more than a note perfect copy: a particular word, a held note, the way two voices answer each other. Since August 2026 the duo has been joined by Gaz on bass, Dave on drums, Tom on guitar and Shaun on keys. The band raises money for charity at many of its gigs, including Manchester Pug Thing, The Hope Hub and Jak's World, takes requests when the room asks, and closes with Caravan of Love, sung a cappella by everyone present.
